Subject: History of the Tiger 131 before Bovington?
Link on message: #11274390
Link on message: #11274390
The_Chieftain: That one actually looked like a serial number, not a tactical
marking. However, there may well be multiple Tiger 131s in
the Bovington sense, as that's a tactical marking. 1st company, 3rd
Platoon, 1st Tank. Unless a unit deviated from the 'norm', which
some did, multiple units, thus, could have a Tiger 131.

Subject: KV-1 / KV-2 applique armor?
Link on message: #11270937
Link on message: #11270937
Lert: I got myself a 1/16th scale R/C KV today:
My
question is about the additional armor that you can see on the
upper glacis plate around the driver's visor / MG port, as well as
on the sides of the hull. - Which KV models had this armor?
The chinese manufacturer labeled this as a KV-1's but that's not a
designation I've ever heard of.- Were there KV-2's with this
additional armor? Reason for the second question is because I
got an aftermarket KV-2 turret and am planning to convert the tank,
and if there were no KV-2's with the applique armor I'll have to
remove it from the model.

it can possibly be implemented in practice. I mean, how are
you going to regulate sticks? Or even regulate people who know what
they are doing without any assistance at all? There are absolutely
things I wish Congress would do in terms of firearms, but they're
all watching the shiny ball and not doing anything which requires a
bit of thought... Though maybe that defines congress on everything.

spent a couple of nights on Cay Caulker doing beachy things, and
another couple in a rainforest about 90 minutes S of Belize city

standardize terms, concepts and mode of communication ... The_Chieftain: Well, is it a good place to start because it sounds all
scientificky, or because it actually makes sense? Here are a
couple of examples. Norinco 7.62x39 (Standard AK-47/SKS thing) uses
a soft steel core because it's cheaper than lead. It will not
penetrate Level IIIA body armor. It is banned. M855 Ball 5.56mm was
nearly banned about two years ago (i.e. the common milspec ball
ammo, I've lots of it myself as it's cheap) because it has a steel
exterior and lead core, and someone in ATF figured out that AR
pistols existed. This was fought out, ATF reversed themselves, so
it is not AP ammo per ATF. It actually will penetrate level IIIA
body armor. M855 will not penetrate steel plate that the old M193
will penetrate, but M193 is not composite to fall under the
prohibitions. M193 will not penetrate level IIIA, as the
compositions of the two rounds react differently to the different
targets. Similarly, some 10mm handgun ammo will go through level
IIIA, but since the copper type is not listed in the statute, it's
not armor piercing. You start to get the idea. If you want
to define something as 'armor piercing', set a standard type of
armor, reasonable for the calibre. Anything short of frangible
ammunition will go through a kevlar 'bullet proof vest' if fired
from a .30-06, for example.

Quote So kenshin what's you stance on armor piercing ammo being allowed for the general public?
The_Chieftain: The problem with the armor piercing ammunition debate as it
currently is being talked about is that the BATF's process of
categorizing ammunition as AP or not does not include the question
"Does it pierce armor." Let alone have an objective standard such
as "Will penetrate 5mm of RHA steel at 100m." As a result, the
current system is a bit arbitrary, and achieves little of note
except irritate shooters and give the appearance of doing
something. Not many people look into the details, though. After
all, the name of the thing is "armor piercing ammunition
ban". It surely does exactly what it says, no? To quote the
ever-applicable, and I wish more people would watch it, "Yes
Minister", "I explained that we are calling the White
Paper Open Government because you always dispose of the
difficult bit in the title. It does less harm there than on the
statute books."

proposed legislation which attempted to ban them, and it said
'device which modifies the rate of fire'. The problem is that such
stocks do not modify the mechanics of the rifle in any way, it
is possible to bump-fire any semi-auto which has recoil. There are
videos on Youtube on folks emptying the 8 rounds of an umodified
WW2 era M1 garand in less than a second. I can imagine the court
case. "You are charged with posessing a device which increases
the rate of fire." "Fine. Prosecutor, find someone to use this
bump-stock rifle. Judge, get the stopwatch. I'll have someone fire
an unmodified rifle. Let's see who does it faster." Plus, frankly,
they're easy to manufacture. I can do it with about $30 of home
depot materials. It wouldn't look pretty, but it would do the job.

banned, in other areas they are mandatory. Some consider their use

unregulated. Australia leans 'against', though it varies by State

CabbageMechanic: We’ve got some news from the Super test – we’ll tell more about new
settings of the vehicles that have already been on the Super
test. FV4202 – we rolled back turret armor to 9.20 values. The
statistics data has shown overly high battle performance on the
Common Test and we have decided to test its updated version without
improved armor. We’ll see how it goes and will decide whether to
release it on the 2nd Common test or not.
New British TD-10 has got its name: FV217 Badger. Besides its name, the Badger will get improved front armor and increased alpha-damage, at the same time its damage per minute will remain the same as in the previous version – we’ll fix its rate of fire. The mobility will be changed as well: maximum speed will be decreased, but the dynamics will be improved – the TD will better keep and gather the speed.
ELC EVEN: there will be significant changes with this very small French tank. We’ll review its autoloader settings: will reduce the number of shells in it, but will improve the reloading time within the autoloader and for the autoloader itself. The gun’s damage will be fixed as well.
Caernarvon Action X – British premium heavy will undergo some small changes. This gentleman will get increased HP and damage per minute. We hope that further it’ll show true effectiveness in battle.
Somua SM – armored British autoloader tank will have its mobility revised: we’ll decrease its maximum speed, but will increase its engine power. As the results, it’ll better keep and gather the speed.

CabbageMechanic: There are some new French vehicles on the Super test. Three heavy,
armored tanks without autoloaders. The details are below.
The new line will be an alternative branch of French HT. The main feature – front armor of the hull and turret. In addition, each tank will have two guns to choose from: either with lower alpha-damage and better penetration, or with better alpha-damage and lower penetration. Each of the guns stands out by aiming parameters: accuracy, aiming and stabilizations help when dealing damage.
Now let’s go through each tank separately:
Tier VIII: AMX 65 t. Armored, with excellent elevation angles parameters (-8 degrees). Players have an option to choose from two guns of calibers 100 or 120 mm. Depending upon the choice of the gun, the tactics of using the tank changes as well. 100 mm gun is intended for more active gameplay, playing with damage per minute and better parameters of penetration as the key features. 120 mm will be more suitable for the amateurs of positional gameplay with the realization of high alpha-damage.

Tier IX: AMX M4
mle. 51. Here there is a choice between 120- and 127-mm guns. If to
compare with the Tier VIII the alpha-damage of both guns has
increased, but the game concept remain to be the same – there is a
choice between high alpha-damage or a bit better parameters of
firing.

Tier X: AMX M4 mle. 54. More armor and higher calibers – 120 mm and 130 mm. 120 mm gun has excellent armor penetration (the value is 264) and terrific aiming parameters, which allows to effectively deal damage to the opponent at long distances. 130 mm has worse accuracy, but at the same time has alpha-damage (the value is 560), which will allow to effectively skirmish with the opponent.

Please, note that this is the first test of the new branch of French HT, and none of the stats are finalized - changes can and probably will occur.
Let us know what you think!

confusion is. There are two meanings of 'Blitzrkieg'. We, in
the English-speaking world, tend to view it at the operational and
tactical level. The intense use of multiple arms in order to
quickly break through and then emphasise a war of maneuver. In
this, Frieser traces such tactics to WW1, and he's not really
wrong. The other meaning, though, is at the operational/strategic
level, where the objective is to have a war which is over and done
very quickly. The lightning war in this context refers not to the
maneuver or use of arms, but the fact that it is decided quickly.
This was not the expectation of the German planners in 1940 and
Frieser claims this led to the retro-active appelation of the
phrase to the German operations after the fact.

gunfire. I am beginning to suspect I am bad luck for people in my
unit. I get back from Afghanistan, one of our sergeants, cop, gets
shot and killed first day back on his civilian job near Vegas. A
few months later, my former supply sergeant gets killed in a spree
shooting in Carson City. Turns out another sergeant, this one I
didn't know well, was an off-duty cop killed last night.
Spent an hour streaming Tier 1. I don't know if it's fun or not,
very furstrating to have inaccurate guns which half the time fail
to penetrate when you actually get a shot on target.

CabbageMechanic: Apologies to the Brazilian tournament players, I was not aware of
the scheduling conflict until Friday evening, at which point it
would not have been fair to the other 3 teams to postpone
Saturday's matches. In the future if you do notice a conflict
(schedule for the Seasonal Classics will be up 2-3 weeks in
advance), please pm me and I can try to accommodate.

lightning war was not only a German design. Sevchin of the
USSR back in 1927 I believe was the father of this strategy.
He labelled it I believe Deep Battle and Deep Operation. Had
Stalin not murdered his officer corp his better generals could have
done much to stall the German advance. When you consider
tactics of WWI anything slightly mobile and using air force can be
considered blitzkrieg.

General Staff College. I'm not entirely sure who's arguing what,
here. Frieser argues that the idea of "Blitzkrieg" wasn't even in
existence in 1940 as far as the Germans were concerned, but he does
not argue, that I can recall, that the ideas of combined arms
warfare were not originally created elsewhere. Let me go back and
have another read of the relevant section. In any case, the
meat of the book is based on the operational histories of the units
in question, they are not really open to revisionism.

The_Chieftain: I wondered that myself. I can only presume that the staff
were otherwise occupied, maybe with Harvey or Irma and were
resetting. It seems like such a no-brainer I have to assume that
the answer lies with the fact that she is not a permanently-staffed
ship, they grab medical staff and whatnot from other locations or
reservists.

Players complained that they had lost their pretty scheme, and so
we changed it back.

Even the Army doesn't have one of those....The_Chieftain: Yes, they do. There is one in the ADA museum in Ft Bliss.
There is a second one I last saw in Aniston, which might be in Sill
now. A third is sitting in a field, for some reason, near Hawthorne
depot in Nevada. To answer the question on Aberdeen,
most of those tanks went into storage in Aniston. The ones
which Aberdeen had restored went to Ft. Lee. A lot of the stuff
went to Benning, and the artillery, including the self propelled
arty went to Ft Sill.
