The_Chieftain:   A large amount of his photographs were sold off. I have them.   A large amount of his files, however, were bequeathed to another author; one who wouldn't urinate on me if I were on fire. I have no idea what he plans on doing with them in the long run, but I can fairly guarantee that out of spite he won't release them to aid in anything I might be remotely associated with.   That said, much of the Icks collection is retained by the Armor Museum. If they've finally opened up the boxes after the move to Ft Benning...

The_Chieftain: Here's the Amazon review I caught on Sherman. Another review made a similar observation. The reason I gave this book three stars has nothing to do with the work itself, it is based solely on the actual current editions that have been released by Echo Point Books and Media (Sherman and Stuart). These are not nearly half the print quality of the original published volumes. They were clearly scanned from original books as on some pages you can see distortion due to the binding not allowing the pages to get completely flush with the surface of the scanner/copier. They are printed on very poor quality paper and the ink bleeds a little as a result. The pictures and drawings are not as clear as on the original print books from Presidio. I had most of the Hunnicutt volumes and compared this with others I have from Presidio which is how I arrived at this conclusion with regards to the print quality.

If you are a modeler, this book would normally be a gold mine. However, due to the poor quality of some of the images and the questionable scale of some of the drawings, this book might not be worth getting.

While I am happy to see someone making an effort to bring these volumes back to print so they can be purchased again, I do wish the current publisher would make an effort to print a better quality product. Granted these new print volumes go for far less than the original Presidio volumes go for currently, $70 for a soft bound book of questionable print quality is not really a bargain at the end of the day.   Well, I've told them I have a lot of the original photos, and if they really have to scan (which doesn't surprise me, I doubt Hunnicutt kept microfiche of the originals or anything, or even if he did, that they survived), it might be worth sacrificing an original copy to get the pages flat. We'll see how they do.

The_Chieftain: Walter, or anyone else. Have you picked up one of the Hunnicutt reprints? I'm seeing a few notes on Amazon reviews about it being a poor-quality reproduction.

The_Warhawk:   It was a team effort. The_Chieftain, Trevzor and Hypnotik helped me pick it when I got the job.   In fairness, I have developed a 6th sense for knowing when people's coffee is done since getting the position.

The_Warhawk: Hooookay, I'll step in now.   Chepicoro, the argument isn't that Ronson made lighters for the US Army. They quite obviously did, and no one is arguing that.   The argument is that the slogan "Lights up First time every time" never existed, and based on everyone's research here, no one has found that slogan being used ever. The closest approximation was from fifteen years before the M4 was a thing that even existed. For your average US Army soldier in 1941 (aged say 18-20) they would have been very young and for soldiers that enlisted/were drafted later in the war, they could very well have been even younger. While it's certainly possible that they could have remembered it, it's also not very likely.   Does this mean that no soldier or tanker ever called their tank a 'Ronson'? No, but the lack of period sources, and the actual lack of the slogan attributed to the nickname casts the 'fact' that Sherman tanks were called Ronsons during WW2 into doubt. There certainly were soldiers who called them Ronson's post-war, again, no one is arguing that. The question is was it a nickname during the war. So far, no one has found record of that being a nickname applied by soldier to the Medium Tank M4 during World War II. Heck, I've personally poured over thousands of pages of US Army documents specifically relating armor. While I've found reports complaining that the tank caught fire when it, not one says anything about "The problem is to the point where my crews have started calling them 'Ronsons'."   Now were fires in Shermans an issue? Yes, early on they were, Feel free to read about it here, as our tame Tank Historian (and my boss) weighed in on the matter: http://worldoftanks.com/en/news/21/The_Cheiftains_Hatch_Ronsons/   The subsequent forum conversation (which is accessible through Bob on that article) extensively delves into trying to find evidence of the 'Ronson' nickname among US Army Tankers. The verdict is that if it was a nickname, it certainly wasn't common. (Again we can't really prove that no soldier ever called a Sherman a Ronson, but that's really beside the point).   And that really, is that.

The_Chieftain: He's rather missed the woods for the trees. I'm not advocating trying to not get spotted. I'm advocating assuming that you're spotted, unless you have reason to believe you're not. That means anticipating when the shell is likely to impact. People who watch my streams may have noticed that I will occasionally comment upon impending artillery moments before it hits. After 20,000 games, one tends to get a feel for that sort of thing.   About a week ago, I was playing a game in my T92, and getting all the normal "Chief! Why you play sky cancer" comments that seem inevitable when I play artillery. By the end of the game, I, and all the other arties were dead, and the last four players were all within proximity-spotting distance of each other, around hard cover. We were then treated to about five minutes of...nothing, as no player seemed willing to take the risk of getting killed by moving. As I observed in all-chat "wouldn't an arty be kindof nice about now?"   Now, you can perhaps argue the mechanism for arty in the game. Small alpha/high ROF vs the current large alpha/low ROF, for example. But as it currently stands, if you've got something blocking the route which needs removing so that you can proceed on your merry way, the best tool for the job is artillery. 

The_Chieftain: Not entirely sure, though I suspect the 76mm gun kind of limited it.

The_Chieftain: Plenty of experiments with naval shaped charges, but though I'm familiar with ASW weapons, torpedoes and missiles, I can't think of any that were cannon projectiles.

The_Chieftain: We were giving it serious consideration, to the point that we even made a 3d model. However, it seems we couldn't really find a way to get it to fit, so it got pulled. To the level that the 3d model has been pulled from our development server.

The_Chieftain: Nothing like "home economics" in school in Ireland. I don't think it's a great loss. What i do wish they actually taught was "practical economics" like how the tax structures work or the principles behind mortgages.

I'm feeling a bit deflated. Not only did I not discover something Hunicitt missed (75mm recoilless mount on T72 GMC: It was nowhere near the T72 picture in the book), his photos are of better quality.
