The_Chieftain: Upon closing the top last week, the windows rolled up, and an
almighty crack was heard from the right rear window. Lowering the
window seemed to work without difficulty, but raising it again was
another matter entirely. Obviously something had gone amiss with
the mechanism. Wonderful. Not having the discretionary funds
available to get it repaired, nothing for it to figure out how to
do it myself.
Taking the back apart was helped by the fact that it was a convertible. Lower the roof, and all the room to work with.
A video on youtube gave instructions for accessing the regulator system. Unfortunately, the video was part of a total disassembly of the car, and I seem to have missed the bit requiring that the back seat be removed before the side panels.
Nothing that suitable application of brute force can't fix. More on that later. The lid for the top had to be raised in the up position, to allow the seat belt 'frame' by the head restraints to be unclipped and slid out of place. Once that was done, according to the video, just undo the bolt up underneath the frame, then slide the interior panel forwards. Yeah, no. There's a fair bit of up and out as well, not mentioned. But the stuff all came out. Then the foam, unscrew the speakers, the regulator is visible. Loose winching wire. Pull off the seals by the window frame. Undo six bolts on a metal spacer, pull that up. Getting the regulator out required pulling up the glass, then punching through the foam insulation to get the bolts. Don't forget to undo the power cable.
See above for photo of broken part.
Fortunately, it seems these things break often, and BMW, Volvo and Audi all use the same part, so third-party manufacturers can buy replacements. $30 and a few days later, it shows up.
Put the new one back into place, and realise that the cables are under significant tension. However, examination of the pulleys indicates that they have a 'short' axle. Wrap the cable around that, and as the system turns, it'll 'push' the cable into the correct groove, tensioning it. Fantastic. Start putting it together again.
Plug into the power socket, lying on the back seat, just to test it. Only very partial movement. Turns out that the 'loosened' wires resulted in the wrapping around the winch/capstan getting crossed. Had to pull off the motor in order to access it and re-thread the wires. Screw motor back in. Drop motor. Screw it in properly, and hope for the best.
Testing again, and it works. Hooray. Now to reassemble. Get the regulator mounted back in, lose my ratchet socket down the side panel just after tightening the bolt. Walk across street, borrow neighbours ratchet set. Undo, pull out regulator. Retreive socket. Return ratchet set. Screw two of the three regulator mount bolts back on, search for five minutes for the third one. Walk over to neighbour, borrow ratchet set. Retrieve bolt used for sizing which had accidentally be placed into ratchet set, return ratchet set. Take best guess as to what the adjustment was for the third bolt so that the window seals correctly.
Now looks like this. Replacement part, the blue thing.
Test again. Still works.
Screw in speaker, control module, frame. Apply trim/seals. Test again. Window only half-raises.
Curse profusely. Take everything apart again, even pulling out the regulator. Seems I may have over-tightened the screw holding in the blue connector. Loosen it a bit, replace, test repeatedly. Incidentally, for some reason, with the top's lid raised for the few days for the replacement part to show up, the battery died in the car, so I had to pull the VW around to jump it.
Add parts back in, test repeatedly. Now just down to the interior panel. Now I can see all the clips (what's left of them after I pulled them out with brute force, I can see how it's supposed to go back in. And I have no clue how to do it.
After much more research, the back seat has to come out. The base is easy, lift up, pull out. Curse as I lean back too far, and snap the clip for the sun visor. The backrest is another matter entirely. I still don't know how to do it, but by undoing the two bolts at the bottom, and removing the head restraints, I got enough 'leverage' room to squeeze the interior panel back into roughly the right place. Put back the head restraints and bolt, then the base. Replace the seat cover frames. Get band-aid for the cuts received to the hand.
It won't pass Stuttgart quality control, but I seem to have repaired my window. I have now ordered replacement sun visor clips.

RitaGamer, on Mar 20 2017 - 09:19, said: . Also Passat, good car choice is that is your dad's car. The_Chieftain: Random car talk. I have one as a daily driver.
https://youtu.be/--weWY58mR8?t=571 It's... OK. Not
exciting at all, but big, and being a diesel, gets good mileage for
my 30-mile-each-way commute. Very practical. Very
boring. However, being a diesel, I'll be stupid if I don't
hand it back next year for the refund, so I'm currently daydreaming
on how to replace it. The problem is I like big V8s. I've an S4 in
the garage (Well, what's left of one after 11 years of use)
https://youtu.be/2QLgbTcMV1k?t=23, and the fiancee has an
SL, both are weekend cars. I want to keep this trend going.
The catch is that big (I've a family, and cargo to haul) V8 cars
these days (Think S6 or CTS-V) tend not to be the cheapest to buy
new, and not the most economical to commute in. Getting a used one
a year or two old would be far more affordable, but given I've put
nearly 40k miles on the Passat over the two years I've had it, I
would blow through whatever was left on the warranty in no time at
all, making things more expensive again. I'm giving serious
consideration to replacing it with two cars, one of which would be
electric. The two lead contenders right now are the e-Golf and
Focus Electric. Both are pretty normal cars (unlike, say, leaf or
i3), which are cheap to start with, cheap to run, and given the
serious advantage that the Bolt has over them (with the Tesla 3
presumably on the road by next year), they'll probably get even
cheaper in order to make sales: Face it, Bolt is a far better
car than either of those two, and less than $10,000 more. However,
for pure commuting, I don't need the extra 100 miles of range,
cargo capacity (which sucks in the Ford) can be dealt with by
another vehicle. I'll 'net' about $20k in my pocket on the
VW when I turn it in next year. The Ford is about $31k new on
the road. The tax rebate will be some $10k between the State and
Federal electric bonuses. So for the following few years, commuting
will be basically free, especially if I do my charging at work.
With that, I can then get a large V8 sedan, maybe with no more than
two years left on the warranty, and keep that for the family
excursions, long-haul cruises, fun drives and the like with far
less wear and tear, less frequent visits for servicing, and so on.
At least, that's the current plan. It has changed several
times over the last year.

Subject: A Four Leaf Clover is not a Shamrock.
Link on message: #10836263
Link on message: #10836263
The_Chieftain: I think part of the problem is that although clover is very common,
most folks don't see shamrock except insofar as it's in pictures.
As a result, absent scale, they confuse the one with the other.
Shamrock is far smaller than typical clover (albeit still a type of
clover). Apparently the chances of a clover being 4-leafed are one
in ten thousand, so I don't see why it is impossible for there to
be a four-leafed shamrock. I have never seen one, but I can't say
I've ever spent a whole hell of a lot of time looking for it.
Still, the point is made, shamrocks are typically three-leafed.
WoWS has it correct this year. Allegra, it's not common, but
"Fatherland" is not incorrect in the Russian context.

a law degree who takes odd interest in such things, but I am
far from convinced that he will lose. EO #2 was written while
actually consulting with lawyers this time, and the judiciary are
not a united block. Although the appeals process from EO
#1 was abandoned as a result of the decision to go with EO #2,
a number of 9th Circuit judges took the rather unusual step of
filing a dissent anyway despite not being called upon to analyse
it. And that was EO #1, EO #2 may very well find itself on better
ground in the apellate courts. https://www.washingt...m=.47e003b9770b

Playoff. Teams are randomly seeded in the playoffs. So yes, some
teams will need to play in the Round of 128 and some will start in
the Round of 64. As the seeding is random, there are no standings
to display.

trying to embed your WG vids from You Tube, for new player.
Why do these fall into the forbidden category?
Here are the ones I tried. I've tried twice to link them here and they don't work either. World of Tanks PC - Explaining mechanics - Visibility system: View range All of the "I am the (insert vehicle type here)" and another You Tube vid I have used previously bye bye o-ni Pretty poor form that you 'fix' something (that wasn't broken) and in so doing you break it!

GhostPrime: I have just checked and you should be able to post videos
using the "youtube" command in the reply window. I checked the
Newcomers section as well as this one. PM me with a list of the
sections you mention, and I'll see what I can do to help you
out.

i'm suffering horrid loss of control in games, lag spikes that make
my vehicle drive into distances when i've stopped, and shots not

I understand that's it's beyond
aggravating, especially when the issue persists. Here's the
thing. Even with players talking on the forums, it helps to have
actual Support tickets when reporting these issues to try and get
them fixed. Obviously, we'll continue to pass on when we hear
players talking about lag issues but more data is always good.
