Quemapueblos: Hello and welcome to the first Clan Spotlight! We have an interview with a clan you might have heard of RDDT, The Front Lines of the Internet. Recently their sub forums reached 10,000 subscribers!
They were kind enough to hang around and answer questions from this thread! So if you want to pick their brains about clan wars, clan development or whatever now is your chance!
You can check the portal for the abridged version and below is our extended interview.
Ledif - I am the current commander of RDDT. I joined when Vorkosigan was commander about a year ago and have been doing Clan Wars since then
Vorkosigan - I am one of the battle callers and strategist and FC, I used to be the commander of RDDT after DamienJax
DamienJax - I am the current commander of NRWL, which is the sister clan to RDDT. I was one of the original commanders of RDDT that got us into Clan Wars with the help of Vork. I moderate the world of tanks
subreddit.
Bryant21 - I help run the World of Tanks subreddit and I’m also the deputy commander of RDDT
QUESTIONS:
When and how did your clan form?
Vorkosigan - RDDT has been around since the game started but it was sorta a social clan until, December 2011, Damien, myself and TransparentTape, started getting things a little bit more organized, and started kicking out people out who weren't showing up. Started doing things like actually training, and then in February 2012, we began landing in Africa and we started winning.
DamienJax - Well at the time the sub-Reddit only have 150 to 200 subscribers. We did the Ultimate Conquest Tournament to kinda get practice and we got farther than we expected in that. Eventually we got everybody up to tier 9s at least and we landed in Africa and the very first night we landed we took land.
Vorkosigan - It took us probably about 2 months; we had a decent base of players. We had 1 and a half clans so from that synthesized an A-team, so 15 to 20 people.
DamienJax - We kicked out everyone under tier 8 and started working with the people who had tier 9s to get them to tier 10s
Ledif - Back then it was only like 200 people
DamienJax - But the 200 people back then were pretty active, we have never had to go to the forums to do active recruiting, they just come from Reddit
Ledif - In my case that's how I joined, I followed the subreddit for a while and then I was looking for a Clan Wars clan and there was one right in front of me, so it was fairly straight forward.
Bryant21 - For me I found the subreddit, kinda just one of those things. I saw the game, I played it a bit in beta from a friend and searched randomly one day and it’s what came up. Oh this seems like a pretty cool place. I'll see what these 250 guys are up to.
Vorkosigan - It started growing quite fast after that actually.
DamienJax - After we started organizing
Did you expect to do so well?
DamienJax - God no, I think I talked to Vorkosigan about it and said "hopefully RDDT 4 will be the last one we will have to create"
Vorkosigan - And then we keep saying that...
Bryant21 - We have 18 clans, 5 on the European server, 1 on SEA server and the rest are on the North American server and they are filling up. What we try to do, and this isn't entirely different from other clans, is
basically host a teamspeak where anyone can get on, we don't really care about your player skill and you can hang out and talk to people and just get some good advice. Play with people, and I mean that's how I got into the game. I jumped on and said "hey can somebody platoon with me please?" and now I'm running things!

Play with people, and I mean that's how I got into the game. I jumped on and said "hey can somebody platoon with me please?" and now I'm running things!
How is your clan structured? (ranks?) Ledif - Within the clan, we have 3 Deputy Commanders and myself as the commander. I would say that these are the people that lead the clan. They make the decisions, and handle most of the diplomacy and talking with other clans. I think that is an important point because when you are dealing with other clans you have to be able to make the decision. Having someone who is just running errands back and forth between clans, while convenient for the commander and deputy commanders so they don't have to deal with that after other things, is not really practical. You need to be able to say yes or no to something.
Bryant21 - Then the Field Commanders are usually the people who get down and dirty making strats and actually calling battles.
Vorkosigan - The way we usually work it. The commander and the deputy commanders, while we do play and do help out with the strats, take more a hands off approach on that. We usually rely on our field commanders to lead the battles, come up with the strategies and we are more of the political aspect. We deal with other clans. We talk to Wargaming. We do things to that affect.
Ledif - The effort required to do everything is too great for 1, 2, 3 or 4 people. It is best to differentiate...
Ledif- You have the experience of a lot of RDDT commanders here and it’s very important to delegate responsibility
Bryant21- I think that is something a lot of smaller clans don't realize. They think they can have 1, 2, or 3 guys who are going to do everything and lead the battles, talk to other clans etc. but the hours rack up. It is difficult for one person to do. I mean if you have to time, great, but for most people it is going to be a little too much.
DamienJax - RDDT is also distinguished in its democratic process. I mean the regular membership has a lot of say in what goes on. A lot of clans are generally top down and you do whatever the commander says. As far as Reddit goes, membership is very vocal when they don't like something.
Ledif - I can't make a decision that goes completely against what everyone wants. No one will do something if they don't want to
Please describe the environment in your clan's community. Ledif - We host weekly meetings for all the clan commanders to participate in and talk.
DamienJax - There have been a few public blow ups regarding miscommunication and lack of communication. So I think we learned from that and we try to keep everyone in the loop a lot more now
Bryant21 - That is one thing I think is different about our community, is if you mess up in terms of leading all these people, they are going to post and they are going to have 10,000 people looking at it, as opposed to someone who messes up with their clan in the forums and it might get overlooked or not seen. It is pretty much guaranteed to be seen by somebody. I can be stressful at times.
Vorkosigan - Even in the Clan Wars clans we want to keep it fun and I mean there is a time to be serious and there is a time to be fun. We try to have a much fun as we can.
DamienJax - Even among other clans in the game, we generally are not jerks to them at all. We are generally friends with most clans in the game.
What have you learned about Clan Wars and maintaining a clan that you wish you knew when you started? Vorkosigan - The ‘don't it all yourself thing’, which I tried, and burned out on tanks completely for a good 3 to 4 months
DamienJax - Yeah, I'd say that is a big aspect is trusting other people to handle issues.
Vorkosigan - Separating the actual strats and battle command vs overall diplo command is an important aspect I wish I had known.
Bryant21 - One things that most clans do, that we did a lot when we first started that wish we hadn't done, which was don't hop around the map. What I mean is a lot of clans they will land on a landing zone and you lose, so you say "Well I'm not doing that again," so you go to a different landing zone, which is a different map, and then you lose. What you should do, and what we learned later, was focus on a map. Land on the same place 3 time, 4 nights in a row, and just really learn that map. Get it’s ins and outs and that will help out tremendously.
Vorkosigan - Once you have that map down, maybe you can go another map and do the exact same thing. And the great is every map in a landing zone is inside the land somewhere else too. So you master it and take a landing zone you will know all the rest of the maps in the area.
Ledif - Practice is something you are going to need to do if you want to get better.
Bryant21 - Back when we were starting we had to practice so much.
What process does your clan typically go through to get ready for a clan battle? DamienJax - At first, like an hour or two before or even a day before depending what we are doing, the field commanders will get together and brainstorm strats for the map, write it up in ATC. If we are really hardcore training like we were for Stage 2, we will get people on an hour before clan wars and actually run different training rooms. See what works, modify strats, etc. If it is easy mode, we will just get the strats up, stick them up on twiddla or maptactics or one of the dozen things coming out now and then just essentially go over it with everyone who is going to be in that battle and the rest of the clan for that matter. We will see if they have suggestions. We have tried and not succeeded with just 15 minutes before hand throwing together a strat. Don't do that, it never works.
Ledif - Taking the map and scribbling on it to determine where tanks are going ends up confusing and falling flat on its face most of the time.
Vorkosigan - Just an hour to prepare and you will win so many more battles
Bryant21 - So with the new campaign that came out, tier 1 was going to be clan wars for a night and we had no idea how to play tier 1s. So we actually got off the map and focused on training tier 1s for pretty much a week and we learned a lot from that. Basically what their limitation were, how to move them in groups, what’s the best way to attack a turtle strat and various things that, what who I talked with, a lot of the clans we talked with just kinda snarked at that
Ledif - The lower tiers were great because we go from having about 300-400ish people with top tier tanks that can participate in clan wars to roughly 1000 plus people who are willing to potentially show up and play in Clan Wars style matches with their tanks.
Ledif - I love playing top tier tanks but campaign definitely succeeded. We saw clans that couldn't have participated on the map. RDDT 2, 3, 6, 7, all those guys had a great time playing low tiers. While I may not have loved purchasing and playing low tier tanks, they definitely enjoyed it.
Bryant21 - All our subclans just loved the crap out of this event.
What do you consider to be your clan’s greatest achievement? Vorkosigan - Not falling flat on our face.
DamienJax - Yeah I think most clans that have been around this long general implode at some point but we have been lucky enough to be around for so long and have so many different commanders and still keep the same philosophy going
Why do you think that is? DamienJax - Just the player base coming from reddit, I think there has always been a real strong continuity of finding people from within that know the system.
Ledif - Everyone having a common background helps make sure that people are compatibly, that people are interested and it keeps people coming in.
Vorkosigan - Even if it is a tenuous connection mind you, but still that little thing.
Ledif - Our success thus far in this campaign and throughout the campaign has probably been one of our greatest achievements. We had a rather hard time with the Rise of the Americas event which is fairly similar to this campaign. I think that drove RDDT to really try and get our stuff together for this event. See our success has been very rewarding.
What was your favorite stage of the first campaign? DamienJax - Tier X!
Vorkosigan - I actually liked some of our tier 7 stuff. Simply because I got to use 6 M40/43s on a map all at once. (before the last patch)
DamienJax - Stage 3 is a little more stressful for me, obviously if i lose the landing zone, which I did, it can really impact my final Victory Points. I'm look forward to stage 4 though.
Bryant21 - Stage 4 should be a blast I think
Favorite Map? Lineup? Opposing Lineup? Tier Settings? Ledif - Beating cap fast strategies is some of the most satisfying things, when you see tanks piling on to a cap circle and getting repeatedly shoot
Vorkosigan - Then if you have the high ground and you have autoloaders and they just evaporate.
Bryant21 - In terms of our favorite maps it’s what? Fjords, Ruinberg, or Cliff?
Ledif - Fjords is a very fickle map.
Bryant21 - Ruinberg is just such a versatile map. You can bring mediums, autoloaders, E-100s, TDs.
What was the toughest/most exciting clan battle your clan has had?
Ledif - There were some close fights on our landing zone during the first stage. Turned our we really needed to keep holding that Landing Zone and it was good that we did.
Bryant21 - Wasn't 13 to 15 the final call on one of them?
Vorkosigan - I believe that was Death from Above.
Ledif - It was tier 4 I think, it was very close. A lot of hoping our Hetzer hiding in a bush was able to reset our cap and shoot some stuff and not get spotted.
Bryant21 - I think from the overall Campaign that was probably the closest win that we have had.
Ledif - Absolutely, that landing zone match was the hairiest and boy that.... glad that we won.
What sister/sub clans would you like us to also mention in the spotlight article? Ledif - I would just recommend anyone who is moderately interested in this sort of thing, do join a clan even if you don't have a top tier tank. The social clans don't require you to do much of anything, but they are a great place to find platoons and during these campaigns they occasionally participate in a big way.
Bryant21 - I've talked to a lot of people who are worried about their stats and they think they aren't good enough to get into clan wars. Don't be discouraged about that, I mean we have training clans such as
RDDT4 available that can help you. You can join that training clan and you can platoon with people and you can learn how to play the game a little bit better. Just have more fun and eventually you will be able to play in more serious Clan Wars.
Anything else you would like to add? DamienJax - People should visit the sub-Reddit, they don't have to join a Reddit clan, but the sub-Reddit has a lot of good, thoughtful conversation.

I think the 50 number people are referring to is top 30 at end of the campaign + (top 5 * 4 stages = 20 ) = 50. AFAIK its just a poor translation issue

View Posted_anger, on Jul 22 2013 - 01:07, said: well, if they do expand the campaign top 30 to 50 for the NA server as well many will be happy.

i'm curious though, did WG really not think most top 5 winners wouldn't also be top 30 at the end? especially after saying they were going to convert VP to gold?

Quote I submitted a ticket. WG seems to admit that there is a problem but wont disclose its nature. WG suggested that I create a "buzz" on the forums before their developers will consider addressing the issue.

Yoott: Most likely this is on the 3rd party end  , rather then a mistake on WG's end. More then likely the 3rd party is grabbing the wrong data for those vehicles. They may not have the right string to catch those vehicles.
My suggestion would be track the exact vehicles not showing up and let the 3rd party site know they are not collecting that data and see if they can fix from their end.

Please explain to me which team would win in a draw when one team's group leader is dead but did 300 damage and the other team's group leader is half alive but didn't score any damage.
If you can't disclose this information then just say so. You don't have to copy and paste tournament rules in a crappy excuse to avoid answering.

dance210: I highly doubt that Captain_Judo was attempting to mock or belittle your question. It is more likely that he (incorrectly) thought that you already understood what the terminology meant and simply needed the draw rules to be posted for easy reference.
While I am not 100% sure, I believe you are thinking about Group Leader incorrectly (either that, or I am). When teams are separated into different brackets, they are placed in groups. So the Group Leader, would be whoever was in first place (assuming there is only one group leader.
I'm going to try breaking down the draw rules, as far as I understand them, in bold. If I am wrong or am making incorrect assumptions, Captain_Judo or Yoott will correct me, I'm sure.
Draws at the end of the round will be resolved based on the following criteria (and in the following order):
**Note: For this example Team A and Team B are tied for second. Team C is the Group Leader**
Head to Head How do Team A and Team B rank against each other? Which team won when they battled. If they drew, move on to the next category.
Head to Head Against Group Leader How do Team A/B rank against Team C? Did one team lose and one team win? If both lost (or won) against the group leader, move on to the next category.
Opponent Strength - final rank of opponents that have defeated your team  Did one team lose to the team in last place, and one team lose to the team in 3rd? The team that lost to the higher ranked opponent (e.g. 3rd place) should win the draw.
Complete Draw - gold split
Hope this helps and makes things a bit clearer. If you have any questions, or anything I said didn't make sense, please let me know :)
