Subject: failing to understand WG's reasoning

Revanant, on Dec 28 2012 - 11:33, said: Hey sorry if I'm wrong but didn't you change the MM to accomidate
t10 mediums and TD's? How was that significantly different from
making t10 arty? I'm honoestly just curious, as I've seen some of
these problems before and realize something added could have easily
confused the process.

GeneralDirection:
We didn't change the core matchmaker functionality, we just added tier 10 to medium and TD branches--much the same as we plan to do for SPGs. But until we make that change, this is the only workable solution. Because SPGs cap at tier 8, there's a lot of code at play specifically related to SPGs that would break matchmaking if we altered it too significantly.
The obvious solution is to introduce tier 9 and 10 SPGs, but unfortunately they aren't ready yet.

5 as a cap is silly.
The second 5 arties appear on my match list, I stick to the less flankable piece of non-destructible cover I can find and put up youtube on my other screen, then hope I can go out fighting free of arty or my team wins.
What is my alternative? Stick my head out and pay a repair bill while having absolutely no fun.
Arty in its current state isn't fun to play against, anyone who thinks otherwise is a masochist or biting their lip just to be contrary.

GeneralDirection: Give it a try, that's all we ask. If it sucks, tell us and we'll
listen. We can't promise immediate change, but hopefully the last
year has proven we're willing to alter mechanics if we feel it
benefits our players.

Now, with the sherrif events team killing if the sherrif is on your side is punished, ergo I've not seen anybody do it. I know that is HAS but its a good discouraging factor.
i think what I'm getting at is that the gripes and complaints voiced here are what we like to call the "vocal minority". You hear about how bad the events are and how they ruin the game and blah blah blah, but the truth is there are a relatively small percentage of people acting the fool when the complaints are formed. You have just as much a chance of entering a match with some idiot that wants to drown himself, or roadblock his team, or team kill or act like a jackass in chat as you do someone dropping everything and trying to score an in-game reward.
I want to see mroe events, events are fricken FUN! Anybody remember the "blood plague" in World of Warcraft? Holy hell, it was hilarious! There were panic in teh streets, bodies everywhere, some jerks were running around spreading it, some were working ot heal those affected, some stayed away from hot zones while others just didnt play for a while.
Events are interesting social experiments, dont just stop doing them because you're afraid of humans acting like retarded monkeys....we ARE retarded monkeys.

GeneralDirection: Don't worry, I'm not looking to get rid of the sheriff events. Part
of our philosophy is to design events like this. We have to make
money as a business, but we're also going to stick to our guns that
the game is free to play, and that means giving away gold as a
reward for events. 500 gold as it was before this particular
sheriff event is insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
Like I mentioned in a recent thread about removing the countdown--not everyone can afford to upgrade their computer at the drop of a hat, and not everyone can afford to pull out their wallet every time a purchase in-game is involved. We realize that, and we respect it.
At the end of the day, even if you can't spend the most money on your block, you're still contributing to the game. This is a player versus player game after all, so everyone counts. Without the player base as a whole, there are a lot less tanks driving around, which results in potentially longer queues and a weaker experience once you're in a battle.
So we're going to continue designing these kinds of events, because it gives someone an opportunity to pick up a garage slot, or some free experience, or to retrain a crew. You might even be able to pick up some premium time, purchase some camouflage or top off the gold needed to buy a premium vehicle. We're fine with that.

It just means if there's a lot of arties player they will just have to wait a lot longer, some may just have to wait longer. But if that were the rule, and that is clearly stated, that's not MM's problem.

GeneralDirection: It isn't a situation of A or B. It's a situation of "What can we do
before completely breaking the matchmaker because of the way it
currently works?"
This will not be the last change if we need to make more. But rewriting the matchmaker when we plan to change SPGs to have the same tier range as heavies, mediums and TDs would be a pretty significant waste of development time.

GeneralDirection: The problem is that it seems--at least from feedback--that this
completely changes the reason a person plays a battle. This is not
good.
To give an example that I mentioned in my AMA, we came up with the idea of a Lumberjack epic achivement--rewarded for knocking down trees. At the time knocking down a tree was of no benefit, so the idea was shot down because it would encourage play that is against the spirit of the game.
We might have to review this event for that reason as well. We'll keep a close eye on data from the January event.

Honestly keeping it exactly as it is now is fine. Its fun, a nice little reward, something to look forward to and there are going to be idiots on every team no matter what the conditions.

GeneralDirection: The problem is that it seems--at least from feedback--that this
completely changes the reason a person plays a battle. This is not
good.

Dying to hear this one, specially from a dev.
GeneralDirection: Well, on some maps it's not as easy. I actually played a battle
today on Prokhorovka with 8 on the enemy team, 6 on ours. Given the
map, that was not a fun experience.
So really, you decide whether or not you hug areas that can block SPG shots. It's pretty cut and dry, but I actually like having to think about the IS-7's buddy off in the corner. As long as there aren't 8 of them.

GeneralDirection: After the end of the program. All you have to know is that if
you've played 5 battles between Dec. 20 and Jan. 10 and have a tier
10 in your garage, then you're eligible for the shirt.

How about 8000 XP? (320 gold value)
How about a day of premium? (250 gold value)
How about 150,000 credits? (375 gold value)
How about a combo: 100,000 credits (250 gold value) and 3000 XP (120 gold value)
So many possibilities.

GeneralDirection: If you've witnessed that behavior then all you have to do is report
it. As you can see from the rules, access to the sheriff accounts
carries a lot of responsibility and it's very actionable if a
sheriff is doing something that will harm the experience of other
players in the battle.
