The_Chieftain:   None of the above. The M8GMC program was terminated before "General Scott" was applied to the M8HMC. It is arguable if it even would have been given the same name.

The_Chieftain: From Zaloga: The name Satan was entirely a local initiative since the program itself was outside the usual development system. The existing flamethrowers developed by the CWS (Chemical Warfare Service) at Edgewood Arsenal were unsatisfactory for reasons I explained in the Osprey book. The Chemical Officer, POA (Pacific Ocean Area), Col. George F. Unmacht, had obtained some Canadian built Ronson flamethrowers (the type mounted in Universal Carriers). In April 1944, Unmacht instructed two of his subordinates, 1st Lt. J. P. Bolanowski and T/Sgt. B. W. Whitaker, to try mounting a Ronson inside a tank instead of the previous (and vulnerable) LVT mounting.  When it was completed, they painted “Satan” and a fire-breathing devil cartoon on the turret. This was entirely informal. After the 15 Apr 44 demonstration, Lt.Gen. Holland M. Smith requested that 24 be built for the upcoming Marianas campaign and they were codenamed “Satan”, simply because that’s what everybody had been calling them based on the turret markings. CWS-POA later adopted a modified version of the CWS designation system, but not in 1944 when this work was being done.

The_Chieftain: General Jackson is the US name for the vehicle. Since the British never used Jackson, there was no reason for them to name it.   As for the OP, Zaloga has just done a book on flame tanks, let me ask him.

The_Chieftain:   Well, I really wanted to get it back into the heavy line out of the TD line. In terms of chronological progression, it fits nicely between T29 and M103. If given the real mantlet thickness of 203mm, it becomes significantly more vulnerable. Guns would be 105mm, 120mm rigid mount (As tried on the T34, and given that T34 is premium, it's the only option for putting it in now), and the 155 with suitably high dispersion and reload times. T32 was going to go somewhere else, to be led into by T26, which is a bit more realistic.   

The_Chieftain:   They are kindof addictive, aren't they? I've decided to restart the lot as well, I'm as far as Honor in Exile. Reading material for all my flights.

The_Chieftain: I made a proposal to re-jigger the US tech tree, which included continuing T30's fall by putting it as a Tier VIII heavy. It was not well received.

The_Chieftain: OK, I know what happened. The tank was marked by Littlefield as a Mk13, and I knew it was an earlier mark than that. I just didn't have time to do the digging.
