Italian Destroyer in service with the Kreigsmarine was strafed by
P-47s from the 332nd FG. The pilots had in fact reported the vessel
sunk which is where the story comes from. In actuality, the vessel
(TA-22) was reported as being heavily damaged by an air attack and
was scuttled seven months or so later. So yeah, the scene is
still incorrect (and it's one of a great many in the film), but for
slightly different reasons.
