tell you all about this great deal he heard about if he
provided his SSN to some web-site he'd never heard of... you'd tell
him "Sounds legit, do it"? We're not talking about an IP
address, SSN is what you're asking us to give out to a site we
don't know. I just got a Home Depot discount today by showing
my ID... no SSN required. It's not forced to say
I appreciate the intent, I've made sincere requests here to give
Vets the bonus without asking us to give up SSN or personal info
associated with an account. The responses from WG have
been the equivalent to "Get in the van, they have free
candy." Your customers are saying genuine "Thanks for
the offer, can I have it without making myself vulnerable to
identity theft?" and the answer we get back is "No, no gift without
providing privacy act info". Most Vets I know are
hyper-sensitive to protecting that information, and I'm surprised
to hear WG vets treating this in what comes across as a fairly
casual manner. The_Chieftain: The first problem here is "some company we've never
heard of". If you are genuinely unaware of ID.me (or Sheer.id, or
Veterans Advantage) you are obviously out of the loop. Scores of
respectable companies use them for verification. If you don't want
to provide the requirements, that's up to you.

here's one from Stars and Stripes, which is, as you doubtless know,

is laudible. But you can take it too far.
