The_Chieftain: It's not even that, there is an import on four-year-degrees for the sake of it. In Ireland, a commerce degree is a three-year degree. My dad has one. He made Ambassador. Since we don't muck around wasting time with 'minors' completely unrelated to whatever it is that we're going to college for, like "Japanese Film" or whatever, you are perfectly well trained in the subject. It's not considered any less a degree than a four-year physics degree or a 5-year medical degree. But come to the US, and it is. By sheer good fortune, it turned out, I took a combination course for commerce and law, it required an extra year to shove everything into the curriculum. This meant that I was eligible to become an officer in the US Army. Had I taken the same commerce degree as my dad, I would have had to go post-grad in order to earn a commission, because the government just says "four year degree... in something. Don't care what. But it must be four years"
