Really were it not for the aforementioned "Tiger shock"  scaring the US army into upgrading to bigger ugns, theirs a chance they wouldn't have bothered with the 76MM until late war much like they had done with the 90MM, the biggest threat to tanks was never the armor of the german army as far as the US was concerned, it was the german guns.  People really need to stop with this myth that the 75MM was an awful gun, it was not a dedicated anti-tank gun, it was an all around gun that was used both as anti-tank and infantry support; and in some ways was preferred over the 76mm due to the fact it had better values as an anti infantry/building weapon on the M4 then the 76MM did.  Theirs no arguing the 76MM was a better AT Gun, since it was more or less designed to be better at defeating tanks vs the 75 being designed {much like the 37MM} as an all around use weapon.   .
