The_Chieftain: I don't think there is very much doubt that the US Army of the 70s was not the best organisation it has ever been. It is commonly accepted that it took until the 1980s for the US Army to regain its sense of pride and self reputation.    That said, I am unconvinced that the quality of the soldier was particularly at fault in Vietnam. Again, the typical US fighting man came out the better than his opponent. The problem in Vietnam was not related to military capability. The attitude of soldiers may have had some relevance, though. Even today's soldiers often haven't figured it out
