The_Chieftain:   The bottom line is that they don't need to. You have already identified the one exception, where stowage space limitations such as in the carousel prohibit the use of sufficiently long rounds. Once rounds get heavier, one of two things will happen. Either the autoloader will take over the loading role, or the round will be split in two.   It is, of course, worth observing the British 120mm rifle, which is unique in Western tanks in having multi-piece ammunition.
