The common perception is that a Sherman crew wwould be somewhat
disconcerted if they ran into a cat. The unspoken implication being
that the German tank crew would be less afraid because they were
dealing with a "mere" Sherman. Talking to Tom reinforced my already
extant impression that he viewed all enemies with anti tank weapons
as worthy of respect, and similarly as targets to service and try
to kill. It occurs to me that there is no reason to think that the
Germans felt any differently: That the adrenaline rush caused by
going into battle against a capable enemy determined to kill you is
going to strongly override any theoretical assessments you may come
up with in the rear, and you just fall back on your training and do
your job as your best chance of survival. This is probably with a
