The_Chieftain:   I think even Colbert is kindof missing the point here. Yes, I agree with him, it's stupid that there is so much furore on the matter. That said, the salute has not gone un-noticed around the military establishment, the one organisation where the salute means something, and though Obama does not deserve to be impeached and hung over the gaffe, if he's going to go about making a sign of respect and meaning it, it's not too hard to understand the most fundamental rule of 'don't have anything in your hand when you salute.' The Bush photo isn't quite the same, as (1) there's nothing in his hand, and (2) it wouldn't have been hard to transfer the cup to the other hand, unlike transferring the dog which is already in the other arm.
