Yes, they were categorised as assault guns. I have no idea
if they were crewed by artillerymen or tankers, probably tankers.
But that's not to say they could not be used as artillery as a
secondary role. Even tank destroyers could be, and were
routinely, used as indirect artillery. But, no, I don't
believe it ever replaced the M7. different organisations and
primary purposes.
