How much of a role did the Firefly play in the Allied invasion of Europe?

The_Chieftain:   There was talk, and that's why they evaluated 17Pr. They just didn't think it was worth it when compared to the 76mm and 90mm guns coming online.

The_Chieftain:   76mm had much less flash.

The_Chieftain: M4A1, actually. I've not seen the test reports on that setup, personally.

Quote we have both been in that thread lol no reason to go over it all again here suffice to say it was one test early ammo.

The_Chieftain:   One test, late ammo.

Quote I'm honestly not even sure if the 17pdr APDS issues were ever resolved either.

The_Chieftain:   They were, in 1954. A sleeve modification was issued to be added to the APDS rounds.   Overall, I think Firefly was important for the British, as it did provide a useful AT capability to an army which did not have many viable alternate options, not having received many of the 76mm tanks.
