The_Chieftain: That paper and EE's analysis has been the subject of some
discussion in the past. The question is the frame of reference:
Doyle is adamant that German quality control for Panzers was never
decreased nor the standards lowered during the war. (Note, panzers,
other vehicles like jagdpanzer deliberately used lower quality
plate as that was what was allocated as available). The obvious way
to parse this dichotomy is to consider the possibility that what
the US considered critical characteristics were not what the
Germans considered to be critical. The "hardness"
statement, incidentally, doesn't necessarily get disapproven even
if one accepts the DTIC report at face value. The production
ratings for hardness of the German plate was higher than that of
the US, it would be other factors that the US failed it on.
