How is experience actually earned?

I got less experience than three other people that did 0 damage and blocked 0 damage.   I played like trash, obviously, but I still don't understand why I would have less experience earned than these other people. I had about 10 games last night with similar situations and my squad mate. Is there some sort of hidden mechanic around earning experience that isn't outlined anywhere? I can't find anything online.
