Armor Penetration Common Test: Feedback, Issues, and Bugs Thread

The Patch notes can be found HERE.   Now, a lot of you will have questions about this Armor penetration getting "nerfed". Well, here is the official Q&A from our Development Team!    Why a decision to rebalance armor penetration was made only now? First Tank Destroyers and Medium Tanks at Tier 10 were added to the game with slightly exaggerated values of armor penetration. Then, after adding new vehicles to the game of the same classes, armor penetration was balanced based on vehicles already available in-game values. As a result, this led to diminishing the role of armor in battles of 8-10 tiers. Since armor penetration is one of the basic elements of game mechanics, a decision about its changing required careful consideration, which took quite a long time.   Why the changes of HEAT penetration are so small? The mechanics for the calculation of armor penetration with this kind of shell differs a lot from mechanics of APCR/AP shells. In particular, penetration is influenced by absence of shell's normalization when reaching the armored plating, interaction with external modules of tanks (especially suspensions), and spaced armor. To preserve the effectiveness of this type of ammunition, the value of penetration should be higher than for APCR/AP shells.   How the changes in armor penetration of shells were calculated? As a starting point, the value of armor penetration of Heavy Tanks guns was taken first, as  the gameplay forming class, which decreases linearly from tier 10 to tier 5 – this is the estimated average value for armor penetration of heavy tanks for the corresponding tier. The concept of penetration for heavy tanks maximally considers current situation with guns and is a reference for changing armor penetration for tank destroyers and medium tanks.   If the nerf of armor penetration is significant, how it will be compensated? For vehicles, to which the rebalance of armor penetration will be applied, there will be increase of some of characteristics, such as: aiming time, loading time,  and stabilization during movement and turret rotation.   Are these the final changes of armor penetration? Final changes for already existing vehicles will be determined by test results. This concept will be used while adding new vehicles to the game. Further balancing changes for some of already existing vehicles might follow as well.   What will happen to the price of rebalanced shells? Will the shells in depot be compensated? The issue of price for shells and compensation for already purchased ones is currently under discussion. The final decision will be announced before the release of changes to the server. Please, follow the news at www.worldoftanks.com.   Why was armor penetration of AP and APCR decreased more with the distance? Previously, the difference between shooting from the distance of 100 meters and 500 meters almost didn’t exist. It was decided to improve this point and make it more correct.    Why are Tank Destroyers armor penetration was decreased less than for Medium Tanks? The concept of Medium Tanks involves guaranteed damaging of enemy’s week points, side armor and rear armor. This can be achieved by using mobility of Medium Tanks when changing directions or taking dominating positions on the map. The main role of Tanks Destroyers – hold defensively directions, deter Heavy Tanks at the distance. To implement this role they should be able to damage heavily armored vehicles to their weak points of front armor. In terms of the new concept gameplay roles of Medium Tanks and Tank Destroyers mentioned above will remain feasible.
