Clans and ClanWars

when the map came online is was all white. than hour after hour some territories became red. but no other icons on them .. and they were still marked as [NPC] controlled.
by 19:00 all of western and central europe was red.
at 20:00 the map became white again.. and at 21:00 all (or almost all) the previously red zone became occupied by different clans (the map was now colored in all the colors of the different clans).
my question is: how was a clan able to conquer a territory deep inside continental europe with no link to a landing zone? why was the expansion so fast?
i was expecting only landing territories to became occupied after the first day.
