orders of magnitude greater than the conscious mind. In fact, this
pattern recognition process which creates neural pathways in the
brain itself is present in all living creatures that have evolved
beyond a simple brainstem to one extent or another. Without it,
they would be unable to function due to the massive amount of
sensory data entering awareness at any given moment. The deletion,
distortion and generalization that happens at the subconscious
level of humans makes this barrage of information manageable, but
at the cost of sometimes creating recognition patterns that are
inaccurate, which is where the concept of apophenia comes in.
However, it's crucial to remember that apophenia is a side effect
of the system, not the system itself. Put another way, we are wise
to listen to our hunches, while keeping in mind the explanation of
exactly what is wrong might be inaccurate. If someone feels like
something is wrong, there very likely is something wrong, although
the rational processes of the mind often fills in the data we don't
have to make what's happening fit our model of the world.
Over the years many people have expressed a feeling there's is
something wrong with this game. They play other games,
and compare those experiences to the one they have here both
consciously and subconsciously. The actual theorizing exactly what
is causing the feelings of unfairness is fueled by hidden
stats and the infamous MM patent section outlining. Just
because they can't give a detailed explanation of what's
causing it, doesn't mean something isn't wrong with the game.
Since the pattern here on this forum is to often drop the
Dunning-Kruger as a response, let's get that one out of the way. I
make a very respectable income working as a licensed,
certified professional who helps people recognize and change
their subconscious patterns, I've been studying and practicing
this stuff for over 4 decades, and I've got a piece of paper
from the highest officially recognized muckety mucks in the land
that says I'm officially part of their club. (If your
pattern recognition detects a bit of disregard for their
gatekeeping process, congratulations it's working just fine.
Sometimes you just have to jump through the required scholastic
hoops to move beyond the outdated system.) This one falls fully in
my wheelhouse.
DeviouslyCursed: Sure, sometimes the subconscious can do amazing things. On
the other hand, there are people with lucky socks. You're
appealing to popularity here. You also seem to not be taking in
things already known about the human mind, such as its tendency to
think random doesn't involved the streaks that random rolls
actually produce. Or the mind's tendency to put agency where none
exists. Confirmation bias. Yes, Dunning Kruger as well (ie people
looking for a reason their stats don't reflect how good they just
know they are, "something's wrong here!" ) You also messed up
a part: if it feels like something is wrong, it is usually best to
proceed as it something were wrong, especially if it has life
altering implications. It is not always an indication, and
certainly isn't proof, that something is actually wrong.
