The ranking after 12 games seeds you for the tournament.  If you don't make the tournament, your seed is final.  (17-24 get 1000)
In the tournament, 1st plays 16, 2nd plays 15, etc. in a "traditional" bracket layout.  If you lose in the 1st round, you are 9-16.  It doesn't really matter which because you get 1000 and you don't get promoted.
If you win the 1st round, you will get promoted to the majors the next season.  If you lose the 2nd round you are 5-8 and get 1000 as well.
Bottom line, once you are in the tournament and seeded, how much you win is based exclusively on how far you advance and not how you did during the season.
