What do you do when.

Grimbru: Hi mariner1,   The most important bit of advice I was given by the guys here was don't try to rush through the tiers too fast. The learning curve takes a sharp turn at about tier 5, particularly if you are in a light tank or one that is considered a scout. Around tier 4 or maybe 5 (depending on your tank) is a nice place to sit in and learn the game, I have found.   As the guys here have mentioned there are a host of youtube videos you can watch that will be a big help. Other than that, learn the maps and get used to recognizing tanks. You can hit [Alt] to switch from the player name to the kind of tank he's in. After a while you'll start to learn which tanks and even which guns you simply can't go up against, and those that you can risk taking a hit from.   Welcome to the game and the forums by the way!
