There is a skill in the intelligence tree that makes them last longer but i doubt it is going to allow you using it all the time.   Right now i manage fights by giving a powered hammer to my super mutant friend, and stay far away with a sniping rifle chaining sneak head damage. And fire a rocket or 2 sometimes. I am waiting to find some fatman ammo though, should be fun from the distance
