Is wot community becoming toxic?

Дата: 30.04.2014 11:14:06
Dakiras: Since we're on the topic of toxicity in the community, I think I will wade in with my 2 cents on this.   'Toxic' behaviour is an obnoxious, belligerent display in a social situation. We can all agree on this, right? Furthermore, it's the supposed problem that exists in online games. I say supposed, and I actually mean it...   My views on it? It's a way to shift the blame. It's easy to say: "The community is so toxic here, something needs to be done." "Toxicity is the biggest problem in all online games, and it's these people that make the games less enjoyable."   Yea, really easy to say this... but when people say this, they're trying to shift the blame. If we break down the statements, you will see the people using them are saying "the community" is toxic. The community. Never themselves, but other people. Also, the actions of others should not be the deciding factor of whether you enjoy something. Sure, it's frustrating to lose but that's part and parcel of adversarial games. You start a battle knowing that you might lose, but you might also win.   We're all part of the community. Don't shift the blame! There are probably some things that we, Wargaming, can do to improve the game atmosphere, but the problem of toxic behaviour isn't a gameplay issue. It's mentality. You make a choice to respond to someone in anger. There is some space between the point where something frustrates you to the point you verbalise your anger and frustration. Within this space, your mentality affects how you respond. It's not so difficult to filter. I've been frustrated by a lot of things in games; getting team damaged/killed, an idiot move that I really shouldn't have made, that one-in-a-million impossible shot across the map that killed me, disconnections... you name it, I've been there. Over 2 decades of gaming, and about 12 years of online gaming puts you through all the emotions at some point. How you react outwardly is the key.   Also remember that you're only seeing the vocal part of gaming when frustrations rise. It's not every game that you see someone say "Whoa dude, that was a %£)^%*£ good shot!" or "You totally carried that game. Well played!" That doesn't mean these people aren't out there, it's more that the cases of anger is the part that's remembered. It's likely a human condition, but I'm not going to even begin to pretend to understand why our minds do that.   "It's the bad apples that make it look toxic. You're only talking about a certain amount of people." - Athene   So, yes toxicity is an issue, but not one that is limited to "the community" outside of yourself. If you want to effect positive change, start from within. Lead by example. Regardless of how futile people think this is, nothing will change if we just sit around thinking "Hmm, if only the 'community' would change" because that achieves nothing.   TL;DR - We're all part of the 'community' and we can all do something about toxicity in games. If we all did something, the toxicity you refer to will slowly diminish until it disappears.
