To research from PzKpfw 38t to PzKpfw 38nA, you need to collect (grind) experience with 38t to be able to research next tier in that tech tree.
Free experience can be used for research in any tech tree and for any tank you wish.
Experience collected on elite vehicles can be converted to free experience with gold. (1 gold =25 XP).
