it ''better'' in past? On top of these general discounts we have
now, we also have TotT event. So we have a new and improved
Premium Account, which is still the same price yet gives more
credits. The fact is, credit income is much higher now than
it was in past, for both F2P and paying players. Your 2 events from

Now we can go back a loooong way. Playing Since 2012 game improved massively on Credit obtaining / Grind.
Back in the days getting tier X tank required around 1000 battles (including credit grind battles) and that is on high player skill level (high base XP per battle). Now you can get to top tier in ~300 battles if you know what you are doing.
Many points of what LethalWalou posted are clearly speaking from experience. Ways of making credits now:
1.) Personal/Clan reserves that give you huge boosts
2.) Daily missions
3.) Reserve bank
4.) Platoon credit boost
5.) Frontlines
6.) Events like last WT
7.) Brawl (absolutely amazing for credits as long as you are confident enough to play low spending on tier X tanks)
One point I see missed in discussion is Battle Pass. You get basically everything- Credits, Premium days, Crew Books, Crew Members, Skins and Free Equipment. Through last few years I saw multiple "I have 100mln + credits on my account" comments. Which was nigh not visible before.
Same with Challenges that one point was a bit missed but previously you couldn't finish Challenges in different way. Everyone had to do the same but it wasn't 10 days like we have now.
I remember Type 62 Marathon back in 2014 IIRC. 25k base exp 25 frags daily. You had to do that mission 25 times in 30 days. It was really exhausting to do. 625K base experience + 625 frags in 25 days. So in 10 days you would need 31K exp. Not too different from now BUT it couldn't have been done during weekends it was daily mission and you could miss 5 days at most or you didn't get anything. But there is 2nd part of it. And one that sometimes took more than 25 battles. Frags. People were super obvious while waiting to kill steal during the event. I had at least few days i had to grind for frags alone.
Everyone had to do the same and the only way was - Grind.
Now you have mission for excellence which allow you to skip a humongous part of exp required. From player perspective last years included much needed changes to the game that made it more enjoyable and more great things are coming.
