"standard" PzIV though):
Case 1:
Shell hits spaced armour, lets assume angle is high enough to avoid auto-ricochet and penetration is sufficient. Shell penetrates Spaced Armour and flies further, not sure if it loses some penetration power. As there is no tank piece further, hit can be counted pretty much as 0dmg
Case 2:
Shell hits spaced armour, lets assume angle is high enough to avoid auto-ricochet and penetration is sufficient. Shell penetrates Spaced Armour and flies further, not sure if it loses some penetration power. Behind Spaced Armour is present Turret Armour, which can take damage and is hit by the shell. And this one delivers damage to the tank.
Overlord, feel free to correct

Overlord: 1. The shell does lose the pen power, based on the armour thickness
it has penetrated.
2. The shell does lose the pen power, based on the armour thickness it has penetrated. When the spaced armour (side of the tank) is penetrated the shell has to penetrate the turret itself to inflict damage.
Spaced armour parts are good at absorbing HE damage.
