The_Chieftain: The idea was that there would be silica-based armor inserts
which could be incorporated into the hull and turret. (Hence the
turret on the M60A1 got a bit more wedge-shaped). In a similar
manner to modern Chobham armor only coming in straight lines (Hence
the shape of Abrams, Challenger, etc) silica-based armor also
required straight edges. So they built the M60 to accept this new
armor. It was never actually implemented, but the shape of the hull
and turret remained the same.
