As more teams participate, its harder (for the average teams) to get to the later rounds - so prizes could be distributed down to the rounds of 1/4 or even 1/8 - rather than throwing more gold only to those teams at the very-pointy-end of the competition.
lord_farquad: While I do agree to an extent. I think we want to wait a bit before
considering that. I would like to see if the larger prize pools
bring in a significant amount of new teams that will be
competitive. Although it's inevitable that some team's will win
repeatedly (and if a team is that good, then they deserve it) we
hope to foster enough competition to the point where there will be
a lot of excellent teams instead of just a handful, resulting in
more teams receiving prizes.
