the whole idea is to get players in the habit of purchasing gold.
WG can take the slight loss of selling a small ($15) package or the not-quite-as-large profit for selling a large ($50) package.
then there are those (like you) for whom the $15 does not fulfill their desires and won't purchase the $50 package. They are more likely to just purchase the $30 package for a complete profit to WG.
after any purchase, they are more likely the faults the devs refuse to acknowledge (much less fix) and purchase gold again.
this 'special' is just a trick to get you in the habit.
If they truly were supporting the charity; they'd be giving THE ENTIRE PURCHASE PRICE to the charity.

Vallter: The whole idea is to give people, who normally purchase gold on Fridays, freedom to choose whether they want participate in the event or not. Because though charity is honourable and worthy act, probably not all of people, who play on American server, would like to donate PVA due to their personal reasons.
