Boeing 299 was one of the fastest aircraft in the skies when it was
developed back in 1935. 236 mile an hour top speed. It would
get raised to 256 with the 299B (Y1B-17) making it faster, or at
least as fast, as many of the fighters already in the USAAC
inventory. Contemporary Aircraft design however, caught up rather
quickly, and it lost it's rather distinct speed advantage by the
time the B-17Cs and Ds entered service.
