The_Chieftain: On that, of course, the effective rate of fire of something being,
say, 200 rounds a minute (with magazine changes) is equally a bit
academic. You only have a base load of 210 rounds, so if you’re
expecting the battle to be over in one minute and three seconds,
it’s a bit of a delusion. Thus, the more interesting
question is the difference between semi auto only, such as the
British L1, limited burst such as the American M4, standard select
fire with semi as primary such as the M14, or select fire with
full auto as primary, witness the AK47. In theory, training
can account for any of those options without hard coding into the
mechanism, but obviously there is a reason those mechanical
decisions were made.
