The_Chieftain:   Fears of misuse/excessive use (and the occasional fatality) have resulted in a prohibition by the city on San Francisco PD from carrying Tasers. As a result, the next step up from baton or beanbag round is a .40 S&W. Every time this happens, there's cries of police over-reaction, and the SFPD union counters with "Well, let us carry Tasers then, otherwise instead of a slim possibility of death, you get a very definite likelihood of death" and the city commissioners say 'no.' Oddly, most residents of SF would prefer the police carry Tasers, but SF government is not entirely representative, and highly politicized, for a city government.   As an aside, the city's policy enacted a couple of months back explicitly bans the police from shooting into a moving vehicle, again, as a response to past shootings. Under any circumstances. That includes if there is a large truck deliberately running over folks watching the fireworks at the Embarcadero, let alone someone trying to run over a cop. SFPD's union is now suing the city in court.
