Critical Hits?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?...

The_Chieftain: Part of the problem is that the developers are schooled in the
traditional school of wargaming. When I started working here (and
I'm also a traditional type gamer), it took me some time to
discover why folks were complaining about the critical hit
mechanic, to include most of the rest of the office. It turned out
that most folks were used to the more recent form of gaming, games
such as WoWarcraft or LoL. I don't play them, but apparently in
those games, a critical hit is something which does extra damage
above and beyond the normal hitpoint level. Whereas I was used to
the 'critical hit' as found in, say, Harpoon, in which a critical
hit has absolutely nothing to do with hitpoints, unless it's a
critical hit which causes a fire or flooding. I can fire an
airburst warhead at a ship, cause D10 critical hits, and not expect
a single hitpoint of damage. A lot of weapons and sensors would be
knocked out, though, thus limiting the target's combat capability.
WoT works on the older concept. Modules are affected by
critical hits. Hitpoints are affected by hits causing damage
points.
