There's talk that -technically-, CA could refuse to renew the registration of the car, or to allow it to be resold unless the problem is fixed.   And when it gets fixed, what does it do for fuel economy and resale value?   I did laugh at this line from your article, though: " I own one of these cars! What should I do? Right now, nothing. If a recall gets issued it will almost certainly be news, and like all recalls owners will get a notice in the mail to get their cars fixed. For now, drive your car like you would normally. Or you could sell it and buy a Prius. But then you’d have to own a Prius."
