The_Chieftain: If I may inquire, what dates do you have for M50 engine conversion?
The reason I ask is that it seems that much of the M50 production
seems to overlap the development process of the 105 Sherman, the
M50 production changing engine type part-way through. So the third
item to throw into the mix is the development of the 105mm gun.
In other words, for the French prototype to be an early
configuration of Cummins, the following must be true:
Development of 105mm gun must have reached the stage at which
mounting was feasible. The date must have been before the
conversion of either M50 or M51 to Cummins engines, anything I
can find indicates that M50s were likely being built with Cummins
before the M51 program entered production. (Hence my questioning
where the M51 tanks were sourced). After that date, an acceptable
engine deck configuration had been identified, So if
you can show that either the French prototype was built outside of
the date limitations above, or that the two dates do not overlap at
all, or a French document stating the engine, then I'd
say that's fairly conclusive proof.
