The_Chieftain: You remember that old joke about the Frenchman asking for a
passport of an american, and the American saying last time he
arrived in France was 1944 and he didn't need a passport?
Document from HQ Army Ground Forces, directed to Chief of Staff
AGF: M14 14 1942 "Colonel Bolling states that the movement
of the Armored Force crews for North Africa is now delayed due to
passports." Hand-writen note at the bottom by CoS: "I asked
C/E to phone C/S WD and see if head could not be applied to G-2 to
let the men go without passports. He got action. Men are to
assemble Miami and if passports are required a rep of State Dept
will go there and issue them" (These are presumably the
crews who fought with the British Army for experience)
