Did the M26 operate as a medium tank or heavy tank?

The_Chieftain: It was used as a medium tank by the Army, mainly because the US didn't have any doctrinal organisation for heavy tanks in theatre.   The US Marines, however, categorised it as an "interim heavy tank", pending development as an actual heavy tank.
