How many of you would have more fun without sky cancer? UPDATED No arty game...

Tenet, on Nov 11 2014 - 18:31, said: What constitutes this INSTA-GIB Mr. Barett is referring to? It
means that some player on the other team was exposed to an
artillery shot and got instantly removed from the game, with no
opportunity to react. This player, lets call him Alfred, is
experiencing a certain set of feelings - primarily anger and
disappointment at the unexpected and end to the fun he was having,
combined with the realization that he was entirely helpless against
the scourge that took him away. I've suffered from
chronic conditions in my life, not as deadly as cancer but quite
debilitating and discomforting, and I can tell you that this
feeling of Helplessness is the exact opposite of why people
use Video Games for recreation. When you see another player in a
tank and you engage and you lose the fight, there is the excitement
of the engagement to compensate for the disappointment. Alfred
would say "I lost this time but I'll get him next time. I nudged
left instead of nudging right. I should have retreated and flanked
when I saw them coming, etc." Even while losing, when
fighting other tanks it's an INTERACTION. Artillery does NOT
provide an interaction, beyond the knowledge that someone was lucky
with the random number generator. There is no warning.The_Chieftain: I am at something of a loss to see how that is the case for arty vs
a TD. Except that the difference in time between 'click' and
'effect' in an artillery is usually a couple of seconds, and that
same time difference is usually a second or less in direct
fire. That same post-death analysis to which you refer
is just as valid against indirect fire as it is against direct.
"Maybe I shouldn't have stayed still as long. Maybe I should
re-evaluate how effective I think my camouflage is. Maybe I should
zig-zag more when crossing open terrain. Maybe I should use an
equipment slot on a toolkit so I'm not sitting in the open as long
if tracked by HE as a slow heavy" And so on. I think it's
about time I did a rerun of
my test stream about a year and a half ago. I play in a manner
which most people would not consider "Arty safe", and for the sake
of the experiment, streamed 9 games over 75 minutes, counted every
artillery round I could detect that was aimed at me, and checked
the results. I can't recall if this was pre or post arty nerf. Of
19 rounds fired at me in my Tier IX and X games, 11 missed
entirely. Only five were actual direct hits (Of which three came
from direct fire in a game in which my heavy was engaging a park of
four artillery pieces). Three rounds killed me, only one from a
generally 'healthy' state. (And if you think having an XVM marker
on your head makes you a target, you should see what happens when
you have a WGA clan tag and my name.) Of late I've been
streaming longer sessions, albeit rarer. I'll try to make a note to
do the same thing over an even longer period next time I stream,
though my unscientific observation is that I've not noticed any
particular increase in my being blown up by artillery in the last
year.
Quote In many cases the maps Wargaming designs do not contain safe areas. When you load into Prokhorovka or Fiery Salient or Malinovka in a large or heavy tank, with 2-3 artillery pieces on the other side, or even one good one, and you notice you have the best stats on the team, you realize that 99% of your game would consist of dodging shells, with the first shell just as capable of finishing you off in one hit as the last. It's oppressive.
The_Chieftain: Just means you have to alter your threat priority
evaluation. I suspect artillery is very low on the threat priority
evaluation on Himmelsdorf, and other types of tanks move up the
list instead. I reject your analysis based on a claim of
'oppression.' I certainly don't consider myself oppressed.
Quote You have a problem when people's feelings get hurt when a loss they suffered is triggered by mentioning the name of the disease. You seem to have no problem with feelings hurt by one sided abuse in what is otherwise a fun mental sport.
The_Chieftain: Yes, I do have a problem when people's feelings get hurt
un-necessarily. This is supposed to be a fairly friendly and
welcoming place for all players to chat about the game. Nothing you
have said indicates why an opinion on the game effect of artillery
should overrule the simple concept of "Be considerate of others."
It doesn't make your argument any stronger or weaker. If you must
consider the effect of artillery in the game as an abuse (to which
I also object), at least there's relevance because artillery -is- a
part of the game as per the game design.
