The_Chieftain: He has it exactly. It was an M1A1, and the TC has no way of aiming the gun in elevation if the primary sight is offline and thus the primary sight extension is unusable. (If he's clever, he's aligned the .50 cal sight with the main gun for azimuth).    C92 was the old callsign for the control tower.
