I know no upgrades have been made to suspension or
powertrain. The_Chieftain: This is not correct. The suspension has been upgraded.
Quote That should be 2.6 gallons (10 liters) and that is not at normal but at worst (older engine).
The_Chieftain: Definitely an old engine which is at the end of its tether,
but definitely a more reasonable number.
Quote A copy of US army training manual I read, when my English was much worse, warned of driving through or under dry foliage. It also said exhaust deflector must be used when towing.
The_Chieftain: Caution, not prohibition. As long as you're not stupid
about where you park your tank (eg right in front of a bush or
something), it's not an issue. The exhaust deflector must be used
when towing any appreciable distance. This isn't a particular
problem, it takes about 30 seconds to install. Far longer than
preparing the tank for towing.
Quote The issue is how often you must refuel.
The_Chieftain: Not much more often than most tanks. We suck down more fuel,
but the advantage to the small turbine is we have bigger fuel
tanks. We carry nearly 2,000l of fuel, over 1.5 times as much as,
say, a T-72.
Quote How long does it take to refuel a platoon from a single fuel truck,
The_Chieftain: About ten-fifteen minutes, I'd say. Depends on how empty the
tanks are.
Quote I never said HEAT round is not effective. Against hard bunkers HEAT is first choice and against civilian structures it will have good effect. HE-FRAG has much more effect on structures with delay timing and HEAT cannot compare against infantry targets. I did not know about the MPAT. From what I read it too cannot compare to HE-FRAG. It is a sub caliber HEAT round with a fragmentation sleeve, less explosive and less fragmentation. It also seems there is a kinetic MPAT that again is much smaller, sub caliber and part penetrator, than a full sized HE-FRAG.
The_Chieftain: See my above post. A pure, full-calibre HE round is used on
Abrams by the USMC. The US Army has chosen not to buy it for
whatever reason. I don't know what other users such as Kuwait or
Australia have chosen to do, off the top of my head.
