The_Chieftain:   And do what, exactly?

There were no traffic comtroller in Donetsk to guide a plane. Rebels destroyed that tower in order to clear a sky from civilian planes.

The_Chieftain:   Rebels are idiots. Airport control towers only control aispace within a couple of miles of the airport, and only up to a few thousand feet altitude. Towers are a convenience to pilots, but not necessary. For example, when I landed two nights ago after my San Francisco flight (see FB picture :P), the tower had shut down for the night, and I just co-ordinated direct with  the aircraft that was a couple of minutes behind me. The airliner would have been talking to an Air Control Centre, there are only going to be one to three for the average European country.if they even have one at all.
