The_Chieftain: I befriended a chap in Firaxis at E3 a couple years ago. Met him again last month, he admitted that I was not the only person getting bored by XCom, so next year's expansion ought to fix it. He also tells me that a proposal that I put to him has led to some fascinating new gameplay. :)   It turns out that some of the folks on the thread already knew what is on the research list, but I just wasn't paying attention. In my defense, I've been so busy, that as of about two weeks ago, I'm technically homeless. I'm traveling so much, I decided it was far cheaper for me to pay hotel bills when I'm "home" than for me to be paying rent on a flat which I am not actually occupying.
