Member Retention and Development:
This area draws on countless other important aspects when building and managing clan that have already been discussed. Keeping members means you have to understand this basic principle; people want to play in an atmosphere they find enjoyable. That can mean a variety of different things, from an older drinking crowd, a group of war vets, to mature crowd sarcastically bashing each other… even “hardcore” gamers want to play and be around similar people. Your job when laying the foundation for a clan is to find your groups niche and develop it.
Starting with recruitment, it is important to ensure that each recruit is good fit for the clan. The more happy members there are, the more likely they are stick around, hang out on TS, and platoon with others, etc. Individuals who don’t belong (doesn’t mean their bad, just means they don’t gel with the group) represent a problem. It means that either the person has changed… which is fine, or he was someone who should not have joined in the first place. It’s easy for people to disrupt an enjoyable atmosphere for others, thus making them have less desire to interact with the clan.
Building group cohesion through teamwork can go a long way in both keeping members, and developing their abilities as players. Accomplishing goals individually feels good, accomplishing difficult goals as a collective group or team… feels even better. That is what makes CW and other competitive environments enjoyable. Each goal overcome and achieved builds camaraderie, and slowly people begin to lose a little bit of their individuality and trade it for the tag they wear next to their name. That begins to represent them just as much as their avatar handle. Not everyone desires “hardcore” play, but many enjoy the experience of playing alongside friends so try to foster that.
Make sure the leadership remains close with its members. Officers overtime typically naturally gravitate away from soldiers, largely platooning or playing with only those close to them, which are either close friends or other officers. It is very important to ensure that the leadership is always available to a clan’s members, being both active and visible.
Developing and improving player’s skills:
Everybody learns different ways, and at different rates so finding one solution that will work for everyone is impossible. The best we can do it is to provide a few broad tips and tricks. Before you can teach someone else, you need to have a firm understanding of the game and its mechanics first. In this section of the forums there are numerous excellent guides and videos. Once you have a grasp of everything yourself, you can then pass on the knowledge and experience to others.
Game Guides and TutorialsPlatooning with members is an excellent way to help them get better. Think of each match and each situation as a training opportunity, focusing on awareness (watching the minimap), teamwork (when to absorb damage for your buddy), and decision making (where to go and when to go there). After every game just take a few moments to discuss what you did as a group, and how to do it better next time. You are also helping those who are working on “grinding” new tanks for Clan Wars get them quicker and easier. As well as building group cohesion.Training rooms can be nice for showing off general tank tactics like corner fighting, or for showing great locations on specific maps. They can be a fun environment to test new tanks, searching for weak points, and getting a better understanding of key locations on maps.Tank Companies offer another avenue whereby soldiers and officers can hone their teamwork and tactics together. “Battle Callers” can practice running battles in chaotic and unpredictable environments, this helps in making them more comfortable making decisions on fly. For soldiers they get a chance to play with a team, honing their skills with group play.Landing Zones are specific provinces in Clan Wars where teams battle in a tournament ladder system for the right to fight the province owner. These are excellent areas to practice as typically a dozen or more clans will “apply” to land. This gives you an opportunity to have several battles against other opponents in a 15v15 environment. You can attack the “LZs” in several different time zones so you have numerous battles each night if so desired.Replays, videos, and streaming! More and more people are posting video guides, and more tournament matches are being streamed all the time. These events can be a lot of fun to watch, and provide numerous tips and tricks to learn from. The key is always making sure to ask yourself why… why does a good player move there, or shoot that guy instead of someone else. If you can explain and understand why, then you can implement that knowledge into your game and thus pass it on to others.Today more and more of the community are open to help improve the play of the community. “Mentor” programs have been setup so those looking for opportunities to play alongside skilled players just need to ask.As a clan it is everyone’s responsibility to help each other. Take time to pass on useful hints, cool spots on maps, or great tutorials. To get better in the competitive environments of this game such as Clan Wars, the group has to improve. People will have to learn to trust the members of their team to cover them, just as they cover another person. They will have to learn how to focus fire, rather than shoot at the easiest target. Teammates will need to learn how to jump in and take shots for a fellow tanker. These skills do not come naturally to most, largely because “public” matches don’t necessarily reward/teach this kind of play. It takes time and dedication, but with that you can achieve your goals. As players spend more time within a clan, as they begin to enjoy the game not just for the ability to shoot tanks, but also for the time they get to spend amongst friends and comrades; they will lose a little bit of their individuality and come to recognize themselves with the tag at the end of their name. That is the goal of any clan and its leadership. Those players will be there through the good times and the difficult, because the clan has become their gaming home.
