SPGs (arty, artillery, what have you) have the disadvantage of having no real way of defending themselves in a close quarters fight, and a relatively large dispersion reticle for aimed shots. Imagine a Heavy tank creeping around a corner more then 50 meters away, and you "un-lock" your camera from the tank to watch their every action, without a scout or Medium risking damage to properly give you that vision. They only way an SPG would be able to see you from around a corner, if at all, would be someone else spotted you.
