Personally I like the fact that you keep the elite status, because some players do not want to upgrade to a new vehicle (for example some players won't research Object 704) or just have their nice free XP they used to get from their elite vehicles.
You can still uncheck the vehicle in the covert XP tab to keep its XP to advance further down the techtree and save gold... but regarding the fact that you still get free gold daily and even 500 gold during these days, it doesn't hurt that much.
