Thank you for all your feedback, both in support and against this initiative. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and I respect them.
In the end, the effect of reinstating this feature will not be left to speculation or assumption. We will continue to monitor its influence over our community and the way it is utilized.
The excitement will pass and neg rep will become old hat. The goal is to empower the community to use neg rep to express its opinion. Don't agree with a suggestion, complaint, tone, interpretation, or behavior? - Neg Rep that lunacy.
Do you feel like someone else's post represents you, asserts a positive change, deserves consideration? - +1
Haters and trolls are a vocal minority, the vast majority of our community is composed of intelligent, kind, thoughtful people. But controversy attracts more attention than the hundreds and thousands of helpful, patience, understanding posts that I see when I read through our forums.
I am a staff member, but also a member of this community, one that is often in a position to deliver difficult news or stand accountable for a problem in front of an angry crowd. If I feel comfortable with neg rep's return, you'll all be fine. At the end of the day, a -1 can be a far lighter expression of disapproval than some of the vitriol that gets sprayed around in some threads. So please use the rep system in a meaningful way, cast them like votes rather than insults, and shrug off those that feel unfounded. Make the most rational, reasonable case you can for the statements you want to make and you should golden. If you cannot win an argument in a single well constructed post, then you won't be able to win it through continued bickering. Let it go. Move on. Life is too short.
