I just got the StuG III, and was very excited. I was finally gunna be able to rip holes in the PzrKmW IV with that stupidly huge turret and gun. This was not the case. And, just like with my hetzer, One or two shots in the front and I was toast.
When I first looked into TD's, I saw that they had Heavy frontal armor and not much on the sides and rear, and I was fine with that. But they really dont have alot of armor, even on the front.
My shots also bounced off of that p IV. That really ticked me off. A tank destroyer that cant destroy tanks is rather redundant.
So, I Know that the weaknesses of TD's are the sides and the rear. I'm fine if I see a light tank get me with 2-3 shots in the back, or If a medium tank gets a shot on my rear and I go up in flames. I expect that. I shouldn't take hits so easily from similar tiers right in the face like I was though.
-I think the damage and penetration for TD's needs to go up.
-I think the front armor needs to be improved for TD's.
A third thing I would like to see is Research-able armor in TD trees. While other tanks can research new turrets, we have no upgrades for that slot. I think a nice feature for TD's would be the choice to put on heavier armor or a Heavier gun. Make it so that you cannot have both due to weight.
Tank destroyers should be a feared force in urban centers in those tight streets where you can really only see their front. Even for Heavy tanks.
On those open fields Tank destroyers should be feared because they should have good accuracy.
This is just my take on TD's, which, after playing SPG's, Medium tanks and Td's, are my favorite tank to play with. They are simple a little broken imo.

MrVic: The Panzer IV with upgraded turret (My clan calls them Bobblehead Panzer IV's) The turret is insanely armored, The upgrade bumps its armor rating way over the normal. Toss in the slopes on the turret help immensely. Your rounds could easily strike that big turret (especially if you were using auto aim)
I have bounced 107mm rounds off that turret many times, in haste to take a shot. The hardest thing I have found is picking where and when you engage a enemy tank or at least control that encounter as much as possible. TD's truly are snipers in the range hitting power and hiding. Just some options of what might of been the issue if not then just food for thought :)
I have recently perfected my 10.5cm Stug III one shot kills on Panzer IV's, Its hard to hit sometimes but man the results are enjoyable :) See if anyone can figure out where that spot is :)
