Draschel: It depends. How you hit the track. What caliber you used, to hit
the track. What angle, you hit the track. -The goals being,
you need your HE shell to penetrate the track. If it will not
penetrate the track, it will not go through towards the body of the
tank, where it can deal damage.-So 90mm tier 8 medium gun, with 45
HE pen, most likely will never penetrate 279E tracks. It gets
caught up in track belt and absorbed.-A generic 122mm has a chance
to penetrate the track belts, but cannot have the shot be too
acutely into the tracks or the track effective armor increases and
again, the shell doesn't penetrate the track and is
absorbed. -Important to note, the shell must have a trajectory
through the track, hitting the tank body behind. Penetrating the
track, then flying off into space or hitting the dirt, and
narrowly missing the tank body behind will not yield a hit or
damage anymore. The HE simply wont detonate this way anymore and
have detonations this way cause splash. So ask
yourself these parameters. Is my shell on course, to hit the actual
tank body, and not just outer decals or spaced armor? Does my
shell have base HE pen to beat objects track effective armor? If
the armor is 40mm, alot of guns already can't beat it especially if
angle of instance is sloped. Guns like 76, 85, 90mm are whole out
of luck, unless unique HE like EBR75 or Senlac or RU251 that
sees these small bore guns with high pen HE. You'd need very high
pen HE like Leopard, M41GF, ISU152K, Etc. After all these are
met, then yes. Even a simple 76mm HE shell can cause some damage
1.13 to 279E. It just can't be interfered with, like vision blocks,
gun, tracks, spaced armor. But actually hitting the tank, small
bore HE effects have been increased. And rather than causing
0, will likely cause 5-10. And 5-10 damage is certainly
enough for a 2HP enemy, or a tank on cap.
